การให้บริการดูแลรักษาผู้ป่วยทางจิต ได้เริ่มขึ้นอย่างเป็นระบบตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๒ ซึ่งได้มีการจัดตั้งโรงพยาบาลคนเสียจริตขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกต่อมาได้มีพัฒนาการเป็นโรงพยาบาลจิตเวช โดยมีการจัดตั้งกรม กองขึ้นดูแลและในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๕ งานสุขภาพจิตได้ปรากฏอยู่ในแผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ ฉบับที่ ๓ (พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๕ - 2๕๑๙) นับจากนั้นได้มีการขยายงานจิตเวชชุมชน เข้าสู่ยุคสาธารณสุขมูลฐาน และเริ่มให้ความสำคัญต่อการส่งเสริมป้องกันปัญหาสุขภาพจิต เป็นลำดับเรื่อยมา นับได้ว่าตลอดระยะเวลา ๑๒๐ ปี งานสุขภาพจิตของไทยได้มีการปรับปรุงพัฒนา โดยนำกลวิธีทางสาธารณสุขต่างๆ มาใช้เพื่อเป็นหนทางนำไปสู่การมีชีวิตที่ดีในสังคมของผู้มีปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิตและจิตเวช

โรงพยาบาลสมเด็จเจ้าพระยา เป็นโรงพยาบาลที่มีความสำคัญด้านประวัติศาสตร์และวิวัฒนาการของจิตเวชศาสตร์ และงานสุขภาพจิตและจิตเวชของประเทศไทย เป็นโรงพยาบาลจิตเวชแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงมีพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2432 เพื่อให้บริการตรวจรักษาประชาชนผู้เจ็บป่วยด้วยโรคจิต เป็นสถาบันแห่งแรกที่ผลิตบุคลากรการแพทย์และวิชาชีพที่เกี่ยวข้องด้านสุขภาพจิตและจิตเวชศาสตร์

โรงพยาบาลศรีธัญญา เปรีบเสมือนผลผลิตของศาสตราจารย์นายแพทย์หลวงวิเชียรแพทยาคม จากการที่ท่านเป็นผู้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการก่อตั้งโรงพยาบาลศรีธัญญา 69 ปีที่ผ่านมา โรงพยาบาลศรีธัญญาได้ทำหน้าที่ให้บริการด้านสุขภาพจิตแก่ประชาชนจนเป็นที่ยอมรับและเชื่อถือตราบจนทุกวันนี้ ถ้าเป็นข้าราชการก็คงถึงวาระที่ล่วงเลยการเกษียณอายุราชการไปแล้ว 9 ปี เป็นช่วงเวลาที่ต้องพักผ่อน แต่ศรีธัญญาเป็นองค์การสุขภาพจิตภารกิจหน้าที่ยังคงต้องดำเนินงานต่อไปอย่างไม่อาจหยุดยั้ง มีแต่จะต้องพัฒนาไปข้างหน้าเรื่อยๆ เพื่อการเพิ่มคุณค่าของการบริการด้านสุขภาพจิต รับใช้ประชาชนและผู้รับบริการตลอดไป
